CT Urography (CTU)
CT Urography (CTU) is a specialized imaging procedure used to visualize the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, and bladder, using computed tomography (CT) technology. It helps in diagnosing and evaluating various urinary system conditions.
Process:
During a CT brain scan, the patient lies on a table that moves into the CT scanner—a large, doughnut-shaped machine. X-ray beams are directed through the head from different angles, and detectors measure the amount of radiation absorbed. A computer processes this data to create detailed images of the brain.During a CT Urography scan, the patient is injected with a contrast dye intravenously, which helps to highlight the urinary tract structures. The patient then undergoes a series of CT scans, during which detailed cross-sectional images of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder are captured. These images are processed by a computer to create comprehensive pictures of the urinary system.
Uses:
- Detection of Kidney Stones: CTU is highly effective in detecting and locating kidney stones within the urinary tract.
- Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): It helps in identifying infections, blockages, or abnormalities in the kidneys or ureters.
- Assessment of Tumors or Masses: CTU aids in detecting and characterizing tumors, cysts, or other growths within the urinary system.
- Evaluation of Hematuria (Blood in Urine): It assists in determining the cause of blood in the urine, which may be due to kidney or bladder conditions.
- Monitoring Kidney Function: CTU can assess kidney function and identify anatomical abnormalities affecting kidney drainage.
Others:
- Non-Invasive Imaging: CTU is a non-invasive alternative to traditional urography procedures, providing detailed images without the need for invasive tests.
- Quick and Efficient: The scan is relatively quick, and results are available promptly for timely diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Guidance for Interventional Procedures: CTU findings guide procedures such as ureteral stent placement or nephrostomy tube insertion.
